When we open up and read 

the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin,
our hearts overflow 

with hope and courage.
Unlimited wisdom gushes up 

from within.
When particularly facing hardships,
let's charge forwards 

exerting ourselves in the 

two ways of practice and study!*

*"Exert yourself in the two ways of practice and study. Without practice and study, there can be no Buddhism. You must not only persevere yourself; you must also teach others. Both practice and study arise from faith. Teach others to the best of your ability, even if it is only a single sentence or phrase."

"Nichiren Daishonin treasured the places to which he had a connection, and he cared about the people there and warmly embraced them.

"In a letter to a disciple in his home province of Awa (present-day southern Chiba prefecture), the Daishonin fondly recalls those he knows there, writing: 'I never think lightly of the people from my native province, nor do I cease to care about what happens to them, even if they have caused me sorrow or treated me cruelly" (WND–1, 661).

"Inheriting this vast, all encompassing spirit of the Daishonin and cherishing a deep love for their communities, the mentors and disciples of Soka have made the place where they are the starting point of their sincere, persevering efforts to realise the Daishonin's ideal of 'establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land.'

"By steadfastly chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and engaging in dialogue with a deep wish for others' happiness and a peaceful world for all, we are creating safe havens of hope, renewal and good fortune."

"Out of his wish for the happiness and peace of all humankind, Nichiren Daishonin proclaimed the establishment of his teaching of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo [on April 28th, 1253]. And he embarked alone on a great struggle to propagate the Mystic Law while enduring unceasing hardship and persecution.

"The mentors and disciples of Soka have inherited the spirit of taking personal initiative for kosen-rufu  The more challenging the times, let's chant the lions roar of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and send forth the brilliant light of the Buddhism of the Sun from where we are. Fellow Bodhisattvas of the Earth will emerge in response without fail."

"A passage from the 'Teacher of the Law' chapter [of the Lotus Sutra] reads: 'If one of these good men or good women [in the time after I have passed into extinction is able to secretly expound the Lotus Sutra to one person, even one phrase of it, then you should know that] he or she is the envoy of the thus come one [the Buddha]" [LSOC10, 200]. This means that anyone who teaches others even a single phrase of the Lotus Sutra is the envoy of the Thus Come One, whether that person be priest or layman, nun or laywoman.

"Our members working in the nursing profession, not least the members of our Shirakaba-kai (the women's division nurses group in Japan),* are striving tirelessly, day and night, to save and protect lives. Nichiren Daishonin is surely praising their devoted unseen efforts.

"The great violinist Yehudi Menuhin (1916—1999) once said: 'Life is a continuous effort of self refinement.'*

"Mr. Menuhin first learned of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo from an SGI-UK women's division member. As a musician, he was impressed by the beautiful sound and rhythm of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and he remarked that he had often repeated the phrase to himself during strolls and other activities.

"When I met Mr Menuhin, he commented that he felt chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo was very similar to singing a song and was impressed by its resonance and power. He also felt it was wonderful that Soka Gakkai members chanted regularly each day.

"Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the fundamental power of the universe. When we chant daimoku infused with a vow, we can align our lives with the rhythm of the universe and tap limitless vitality, courage and wisdom. We can realise our prayers and enfold everyone in our environment, our society and even the world in the wondrous sound and rhythm of happiness, of the Mystic Law.

"Today again, as we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo 'regarding both suffering and joy as facts of life" (cf. WND–1, 681), let's take on the challenges in front of us, vibrant in body and mind!"

"In Nichiren Buddhism, we offer prayers for our deceased loved ones each day as part of our practice of gongyo and chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. In this way, we pass on to them the great benefit of the Mystic Law we are accumulating in our lives. This is the meaning of praying for the deceased in Nichiren Buddhism. We can do this directly without any intermediary.

"All our efforts for kosen-rufu and to encourage our fellow members become supreme offerings we can make for the happiness of the deceased. The victory and growth of successors serve as proof that those who have passed away have attained Buddhahood.
