---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"But a century ago, the French author Romain Rolland (1866–1944) raised a dissenting voice, challenging the assumption that war is inevitable. At that time, nation after nation was rushing headlong into the conflict that would become World War I, succumbing to what he called 'the venerable refrain' that 'The fatality of war is stronger than our wills.' Rolland cried out: 'There is no fatality! The only fatality is what we desire; and more often, too, what we do not desire enough.' He adamantly rejected the irresponsible tendency of the political and opinion leaders of the time to allow themselves to accept war as the unavoidable fate of humanity.
"Ultimately, the root cause of conflict and human misery lies in the helpless feeling that an individual can't make a difference—in other words, in an ignorance of and inability to believe in the dignity and infinite potential of human beings. The late South African President Nelson Mandela (1918–2013), whom I deeply admire, also battled against this in his struggle against racial discrimination.
"I cannot help but regard the Daishonin's lion's roar of 'blocking off the road that leads to the hell of incessant suffering' (cf. WND-1, 736) as an assault on the darkness of distrust and disrespect for human beings."
