"In a letter to Soya Kyoshin, a disciple who was active in Shimosa Province, part of present-day Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures, the Daishonin writes:
"'The Lotus Sutra offers a secret means for leading all living beings to Buddhahood. It leads one person in the realm of hell, one person in the realm of hungry spirits, and thus one person in each of the nine realms of existence[1] to Buddhahood, and thereby the way is opened for all living beings to attain Buddhahood. The situation is like the joints in a piece of bamboo: if one joint is ruptured, then all the joints will split.' (WND-1, 512)
"An individual struggling in the life state of Hell, suffering from illness, financial hardship, or emotional distress—the Lotus Sutra enables such an individual to attain Buddhahood and achieve absolute happiness. The fact that this individual can be liberated from suffering is proof that all can. Buddhism is truly immense in its scale. It enables all people to attain enlightenment. That immensity is embodied in a single human being, encompassing everything and everyone.
"When we, as individuals, attain Buddhahood, we can guide all others in our lives along the path of Buddhahood as well.
"The power of the Mystic Law will lead our family members, relatives, and friends—even those suffering in the worlds of Hell or Hunger—in the direction of hope and happiness.
"This is the principle underlying the conviction that the human revolution of a single individual can change the entire world.
"That's why one person with strong faith is key. The resolve and commitment of one person are crucial."
