---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The main message of Soka Gakkai founding president Tsunesaburo Makiguchi's The Geography of Human Life is for all human beings to live together as global citizens who share the awareness that the Earth is our common home, and the world is our stage of action.
"In this same work, President Makiguchi argued that humanity would evolve through four stages. The first three stages, he said, were (1) military competition; (2) political competition; and (3) economic competition. This has proven to be true.
"He categorised the world of his day as being in the stage of economic competition, when all things are measured by the criteria of profit and loss. But he was certain that this was not the final stage of human development.
"What, then, was the fourth stage, following that of economic competition? It was, he declared confidently, the stage of what he called 'humanitarian competition.'
"President Makiguchi envisioned the arrival of a time when the power of humanitarianism, rather than military, political, or economic forces, would lead the world.
"Finding the way to strengthen and amplify the power of the human character, rather than military, political, or economic might—this is the path of hope for humankind and the great path of Buddhism.
"As President Makiguchi so astutely foresaw, the light of humanism is beginning to illuminate our world. Humanism is the only way forwards for the human race.
"Let us strive to usher in a brilliant age of humanity through the power of peace, culture, and education, based on Buddhism."
