-- Words of the Week --
This year marks the 66th anniversary
of the establishment
of The Seikyo Shinbun newspaper.*
Let's express our deepest appreciation
to all of our
"uncrowned heroes and heroines"
who so selflessly and unceasingly
dedicate themselves to delivering
our various SGI publications.
By printed words for justice with the Soka spirit,
let's illuminate (the world) with a great beaming light
towards establishing the correct teaching
for the peace of the land!
*The Seikyo Shimbun was established on April 20, 1951. At that time, it was a two-page newspaper with a circulation of 5,000 that was published every 10 days. The frequency of publication increased steadily, to once a week, twice and then three times a week, until it finally became a daily in July 1965. It was also expanded to first eight and then twelve pages. Its current circulation is 5.5 million. It is distributed daily by a vast network of volunteers, who receive a small stipend for their work. --- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are as if in winter, but winter always turns to spring. Never, from ancient times on, has anyone heard or seen of winter turning back to autumn. Nor have we ever heard of a believer in the Lotus Sutra who turned into an ordinary person."
(Winter Always Turns to Spring

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Nichiren Daishonin continued to encourage and foster his young disciple Nanjo Tokimitsu in the midst of harsh adversity. 'Consider that your faith is being tested' (WND-1, 800), he wrote, urging Tokimitsu to rejoice at and bravely challenge every obstacle. On another occasion, when Tokimitsu was seriously ill, the Daishonin encouraged him by denouncing the devil of illness and advising: 'Never be even the least bit afraid!' (WND-1, 1109).
"Countless times in his writings, the Daishonin tells us that difficulties are trials that we must overcome to attain Buddhahood. When we face hardships with the awareness that our faith is being tested, we cannot fail to overcome them. Our efforts expand our state of life and make our Buddhahood shine forth ever brighter."
SGI Newsletter No. 9589, SGI President Ikeda's Editorial, Put Buddhism to the Test!, from the May 2017 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released 14th April, 2017
