"I am praying that, no matter how troubled the times may become, the Lotus Sutra and the ten demon daughters will protect all of you, praying as earnestly as though to produce fire from damp wood, or to obtain water from parched ground."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"There is one more important point regarding our attitude in faith, and that is, believing without doubt.
"In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, the Daishonin says that faith is the 'sharp sword' for vanquishing the deep-seated delusion of fundamental darkness or ignorance (cf. OTT, 119). To explain what faith is, he cites the definition given by T'ien-t'ai in his Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra: 'Belief means to be without doubt.'
"'To be without doubt' means to believe in the Gohonzon (Nam-myoho-renge-kyo) with absolute faith, unshaken by any obstacle.
"This is in contrast to understanding the teachings but lacking faith. The Daishonin warns: '"Knowledge without faith" describes those who are knowledgeable about the Buddhist doctrines but have no faith. These people will never attain Buddhahood' (WND-1, 1030). Even if one can understand difficult Buddhist teachings intellectually, it will not be enough to attain Buddhahood in this lifetime.
"What, then, does it mean to 'be without doubt?' It is to believe wholeheartedly, to have absolute conviction. However, I should point out that there is a crucial distinction between being without doubt [after questioning and seeking answers] and simply never doubting.
"If religion were to reject having doubts, it would be rejecting the inherent freedom of the human spirit [to question and think critically]. Such a religion would become alienated from society and run the risk of becoming dogmatic and fanatical."
