[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] April 5th, 2017 To My Friends and Daily Gosho plus April 6th Daily Encouragement

A treasured moment, I hope you don't mind me sharing this with you, but President Ikeda came to our school today, the first time in 6 years. There was not enough time to get out of his transportation and apologised for such a quick 'in and out visit' but promised to spend more time with us again soon. He commented, in a very strong and healthy voice how glad he was to see everyone and was so happy that things were going so well towards the 50th anniversary of the school. He wanted to give everyone something and asked if there wasn't something ...so we all got juice later on.

He then drove on to Tachikawa Culture Centre, in the eastern suburbs of Tokyo, not so far from the school. Along the way he said he was so pleased to see the students walking along their way to school in their uniforms and to hear the sound of some of the students practising their club activities. He recalled very vividly how it was now 50 years since the school was actually opened and how 57 years ago he and his wife had picnicked on the banks of the Tama Canal where the school is now built eating rice balls, looking for a place to build the school. Guess what they specially arranged for him to eat today! Rice balls! He also expressed how he very much wanted to put his full energy behind this important anniversary in the school's history.

Apologies for taking up your valuable time but I just wanted to share with our very important readers this special and frankly very moving "news." On we go...

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Suffer what there is to suffer, enjoy what there is to enjoy. Regard both suffering and joy as facts of life, and continue chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, no matter what happens."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'Now, let us set out on a journey,
our hearts emboldened
to spread the Mystic Law
to the farthest reaches
of India.'

"Mr. Toda composed this poem in January 1952, the year marking the 700th anniversary of Nichiren Daishonin's declaration of the establishment of his teaching.

"At the time, the Soka Gakkai had a membership of only 6,000 households. But my mentor's vision went far beyond Japan, as he turned his gaze to kosen-rufu in Asia and throughout the entire world.

"A life dedicated to the mission of spreading the Mystic Law is incredibly noble. Mr. Toda's wish was that all our members would experience the good fortune and joy of leading such a life.

"Unfortunately, however, membership growth was more or less stagnant in all Soka Gakkai chapters throughout Japan that January. Deeply concerned that kosen-rufu would never be achieved at this rate, Mr. Toda appointed me, then 24 years old, as chapter advisor to Kamata Chapter in Tokyo's Ota Ward. He was counting on the youth to make a breakthrough that would inspire everyone.

"On January 29th, I convened an emergency meeting of Kamata Chapter at the local community hall in Unoki. At this kickoff [to the February Campaign], I wanted to share my vow with the Kamata Chapter members. I said: 'Why were we able to encounter this Buddhism? It was because Nichiren Daishonin, the Buddha of the Latter Day, selflessly dedicated his life to propagating the Mystic Law and ensuring it would be transmitted into the future. It was because President Toda, having survived his ordeal in prison during World War II, stood up in the present day to take the lead in fulfilling the great vow for kosen-rufu. When I contemplate the wondrous bonds that we all share with them, I feel a surge of gratitude.

"'Now, we are in the month of February—the month when the Daishonin and President Toda were born. Let's celebrate it with a great victory in expanding our movement!'

"Mr. Toda was not present at that meeting, but we made a solemn vow together to advance kosen-rufu as if he were."
